Cultural universals - aspects found in all cultures. Religion: regulates sexual behavior, creates political and economic alliances, establishes a social unit for enculturation. 1-3 are found in most cultures but not in all. Two people who are married but have n children are not a family by anthropological definition. One or more adults with children are a family; working cooperatively to enculturate children. Exogamy the practice of seeki(cid:374)g a spouse outside o(cid:374)e"s ow(cid:374) group. Forces people to create and maintain a wide social network. Universal incest taboo: no culture has ever allowed parents and children or grandparents and grandchildren to marry or have sex. All cultures have prohibited marriage in the direct line of descent, parents and children. Siblings marriage permitted in royal families in ancient inca, egyptian, and hawaiian cultures. If the brother and sister do not have recessive birth defects, then children will be normal.
