Document Summary

All information is gained using this method. The method of gathering defines a science, not the content. It will make you see things differently. Theory- some idea of how things work. Hypothesis-a theory must be measurable, empirical or quantifiable to be scientific. Operational definition: define terms by how we will measure them. Specific prediction of what should be observed in the world if a theory is correct. Observers do not alter behavior of subject/subjects. Confounds: anything that affects a dependent variable that may unintentionally vary between different experimental studies. Random assignment- every participant has an equal likelihood of being chosen. Collecting data- independent variable: changed and used to predict a response/ dependent variable: response behavior. Experimental bias- sees what they want to see. Participant bias- participant tries to help the experimenter out. Double blind- experimenter and the participant don"t know. Statistical techniques- a tool to help the investigator make wise decisions in the face of uncertainty.
