Lecture 17b: fluid and electrolytes-diuretics & diabetes insipidus: list the constituents of the extracellular fluid that are regulated, extracellular fluid, interstitial fluid, plasma, explain the action of hormones that regulate fluid and electrolyte balance, antidiuretic hormone (adh) It is used to conserve fluid volume of your body by reducing the amount of water passed out in the urine. It does this by allowing water in the urine to be take back into the body in a specific area of the kidney: osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus, aldosterone(mineralocorticoid) Through the skin- by perspiration and sweating. Dehydration: causes sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, diabetes insipidus- deficiency of adh. Hyper-hydration: causes drinking large volumes of water. Infusion of hypotonic iv fluids: chronic renal failure, chf, cirrhosis, water intoxication. 1: excessive intake can cause, hypertension, fluid retention. Inadequate intake can cause: orthostatic hypotension, headache. Increased all cause mortality and cardiovascular death events.
