EGGS 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Froth Flotation, Geologic Hazards, Oceanic Crust
Document Summary
Geology- study of earth"s physi(cid:272)al features, pro(cid:272)esses, a(cid:374)d history. Crust : conventional crust ( thick less dense) , oceanic crust ( more dense thin) Mantle: made up of fairly dense rock. You can find sand at beaches, gravel in streams, and limestone in old river basin. Metals are usually found near mountains and nature has to be concentrated. Mineral mining: systematic removal of rock, soil, or other materials for economic benefit. Make alloy by mixing extracted metals with other ingredients. Leaching: water and chemicals are dripped over crushed ore to dissolve out metal. Froth flotation: mix water, chemical, and powder ore, then bubble air. The metal you want will catch itself to the bubble.
