Pitch (individual sounds that put melody together) The basic property of all music is sound. The sounds (and silences) that comprise a musical work are organized. Music is the product of human intention and perception. The term music is inescapably tied to western culture and its assumptions. Improvisation : involves composing in the moment of performance. very common in jazz music. this is usually based on a highly systematic set of common rules. Arranging : taking an existing musical work and transforming it into something new, while still retaining its core musical identity. Western music- groups of 2"s, 3"s, 4"s, sometimes 5"s and 7"s. Character- (conjunct) v. very little movement at all (static) Distance from the highest to lowest pitch in the melody. Leaps in melody (disjunct) v. stepwise motion. Map out the melodic contour of different tunes. 12 pitch scale= major (happy) // minor (sad) Sound comes from the vibration of the instrument itself.
