Worked at the same time as new vision. Had surrealist qualities in his work, but did not characterize himself as a surrealist. Odd vantage points, taking photos of streets from above looking down. Usage of mirrors and glass to distort nudes, emphasizing changes in shapes and forms of bodies. Did works featuring polaroids later in life, featured items important to him or his wife. Started off as a painting student, moved to paris and met kertesz, who had a strong influence on him. Did a lot of long exposure night photography, had access to flash photography. Poetic qualities in his photographs, hazy, foggy, atmosphere. Used night photos to reveal what was able to be seen at night and not during the day. Close relationships with surrealist painters and authors, did not label himself as a surrealist. Photographed cafes and bars that catered to gay couples, Photographed nightlife, published photographs in a book called secret paris.
