THE HUMAN MICROBIOME
All multicellular organisms share their surfaces with bacteria. We outsource tasks to germs and
would not be able to do a all our tasks if we were suddenly germ-free.
For every human cell in your body, there are 10 microbial cells.
What is a biome? Biomes are areas of the earth where the environmental factors are similar.
Biomes are made up of many different species organisms.
The human micro biome is the diversity of microbial species that live in or on us. Bacteria
influence:
-metabolism
-diabetes
-cardiovascular issues
-behavior
-allergies
-autoimmunity
We cannot talk about the whole human micro biome since it is incredibly complex. There are in
fact several ecosystems in our bodies.
99% of our micro biome lives in our gut. All healthy adults share most of the same gut bacterial
species — the core microbiota.
The micro biome is established in the first three years of our lives. When we are born, we are
sterile but we acquire bacteria up to age 3. Bacteria comes from:
-C-section or vaginal birth
-babies’ home environment
-diet — what you eat in early life makes a big difference.
A healthy and diverse micro biome creates an environment of competition (it is harder for
disease-causing micro biomes to establish infection).
How to take care of micro biome:
-prebiotic — non digestible foods that stimulate growth of bacteria in the gut (whole grains,
vegetables, fruit, legumes; all fiber filled foods). The more diverse your diet is, the better.
-Probiotic — ingested bacteria (fermented foods, such as yogurt)
-Avoid antibiotics and interact with your environment.
