CAS BI 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Place Of Articulation, Inferior Nasal Concha, Tachycardia
Document Summary
The left and right coronary arteries exit the aorta and feed the cardiac muscle itself. The venous return (deoxygenated blood) occurs through the cardiac veins (which merge into the coronary sinus). Blood ow in the coronary vessels during the periods between heart contractions. Ow is impaired when the heart beats excessively (tachycardia). A myocardial infarction is cause by a blockage of one of the vessels. There resting period of the heart is important for supplying the tissue muscle itself with oxygen and nutrients. It is a disease which cause progressive hardening na blocking of the arteries. Arteries are blocked by plaques that develop in early adulthood (18-24) and progressively get later. Moreover, in some extreme cases, this disease can develop in childhood or even in fetuses (whose mothers have high circulating levels of cholesterol very linked to diet). The blood vessels become less stretchy over time. This is also a consequence of lack of exercise (since exercise widens blood vessels).
