CAS BI 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Natural Killer Cell, Kidney Bean, Granulocyte
Document Summary
Engulf bacteria and then explode, killing the bacteria and themselves. Pus is a collection of dead neutrophils. Not really used for this function in developed nations, but since they want to be active these are often the cause of allergic reactions. Bluish granules and bilobed nucleus are very close in color. Circulate and are called macrophages once they enter a tissue. Platelets are irregularly-shaped cell fragments that form blood clots. Cytoplasm of megakaryocytes pinces off to form platelets. Therefore platelets have no nucleus or organelles and are not cells on their own. A low rbc count due to genetics or diet. Less rbcs to contribute to skin tone. Odd shape causes rbcs to get stuck in vessels and vessels can burst as a result. Iron levels are too low, hemoglobin can"t be made. Can be caused by lack of iron intake in diet or lack of iron absorption in body. Rbcs don"t form correctly and get stuck in bone marrow.
