CAS BI 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Ocean Current, Ecosystem Services, Diapause
Lecture 16
• Climate-related changes
o Temperature, rainfall, frequency of extreme weather
o Altered ocean circulation and acidification
• Disturbances are natural and necessary to ecosystems, but megadisturbances are
not
o Disturbances are increasing in frequency, extent, and severity
o Human population growth imposes high demands on forests
• Short term—some forests will rebound from disturbances
• Long term—most temperate forests will change and no support the ecosystem
services as before
• Evolutionary history is also an important determinant of the distribution of
species
o Where and when groups originated
• Evolutionary history is in turn influenced by geological history
• Biogeography—the study of patterns of distributions of populations, species, and
communities (Wallace)
• Earth can be divided into biogeographical regions, each containing characteristic
species assemblages
o Boundaries occur where species composition changes dramatically over
short distances
