CAS BI 108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Left Coronary Artery, Inferior Vena Cava, Right Coronary Artery
Document Summary
The cardiovascular system: the heart: introduction, the major function of the cardiovascular system is to circulate substances throughout the body. Blood, a connective tissue, is circulated through these organs: cardiology is the study of the heart and the diseases associated with it. Location and size of the heart: location = within mediastinum, size = closed fist, ~300g in an adult, base = wide superior border, apex = inferior point. Note that the atria are covered by ear-like flaps called auricles. 2 from left lung: coronary sinus brings blood from the myocardium directly into the right atrium, ligamentum arteriosum = which is the remnant of the fetal ductus arteriosus, valves of the heart. Prevents back flow of blood in the system. Chordae tendineae = tendon-like, fibrous cords that connect the cusps of the av valves to the papillary muscles of ventricles, prevents cusps from swinging back into atria. Provide alternate routes for blood to reach a particular region.
