CAS BI 315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Special Senses, Somatosensory System, Neuroglia
I. Nervous System
A. Afferent (toward) in
1. Somatic
2. Visceral
3. special
B. Efferent (exiting) to muscles from CNS to
1. Toward muscle - somatic
2. Toward gut - autonomic
C. CNS - Brain - FOREBRAIN
1. Cerebrum
a) Voluntary movement
2. Diencephalon
a) Olfactory info
b) Systemaic responses to environment
3. Braintstem
4. Cerebellum
D. Blood supply to brain
1. Use glucoe for metabolic needs
2. Do not store so need constant supplu so brain is highly vascularized
3. Blood vessels are wrapped by glial cells to createa blood brain barrier
(BBB)
II. Motivation
A. Primary motivated behavior
1. Maintain homeostasis - thirst
B. Secondary motivated behavior
1. May benefit offspring, indirect - good at job
C. Can conflict
III. Peripheral NS
A. Sensory
B. Motor
1. Somatic
2. Visceral
a) Sympathetic - fight or flight SO SCARY
b) Parasympathetic PEACE MAN
IV. Adaptation - stimulus is constant but neuron stops responding
V. “Ergic” = neuron that releases
VI. Lateral Inhibition
A. Multiple signals but strongest stimulus wins
B. Hit head and put pressure, compete with pain receptors
VII. Fingers have more touch acuity than hip - more receptors
VIII. Reflexes
A. Monosynaptic - one synapse
B. Polysynaptic - lots of synapses for big reactions
C. SKIPPED REFLEXES NOT ON EXAM
