Document Summary

The study of chemistry: the atomic and molecular perspective of chemistry. Chemistry- the study of matter and the changes it undergoes; study of properties and behavior of matter. Matter- physical material of the universe; anything with mass and volume. Property- any characteristic that allows us to recognize a particular type of matter and to distinguish it from other types. Elements- combinations of these make up matter; 100 elements. Properties of matter relate to matter"s composition of atoms and structure of atoms. Molecules- two or more atoms joined in specific shapes. Chemistry is the central science, central to a fundamental understanding of other sciences and technologies. It helps us understand areas like modern science, technology and engineering. Liquid- distinct volume independent of its container but no specific shape; shape of container: molecules packed more closely, movement makes molecules slide over one another; thus pour easily. Solid- definite shape and volume: molecules held tightly together in definite arrangements, molecules vibrate in place.
