Document Summary

Like dissolves like: polar solvent & polar solute. Ionic solvent & polar solute: nonpolar solvent & nonpolar solute. Colligative properties: properties that depend on concentration of particles, not nature: boiling point, freezing point, vapor pressure. Exothermic: releases energy: h is negative = exothermic reaction; heat is released, products have less energy than reactants. Endothermic: absorbs energy: h is positive = endothermic reaction; heat is absorbed, products have more energy than reactants. Miscible: liquids that dissolve in each other. Immiscible: liquids that do not dissolve in each other. Alloy: molten metals that are mixed and cooled. Types of reactions: synthesis/combination: formation of compound by combining components. If h is a large negative #, then it is spontaneous. If h is a small positive/negative #, then it is not spontaneous: decomposition/analysis: breakdown of a compound to release components as elements or other compounds. If h is positive, then it is spontaneous.
