This class will study medieval romances from france and england as well as examine the priceless manuscripts (handwritten books) in which they are preserved. In addition to studying the medieval cultural traditions of chivalry and courtly love, we will also explore the materials, methods, and techniques of medieval bookmaking. Furthermore, students will directly engage in the bookmaking process by producing their own handwritten commonplace books.
