During wwii left his depth recorder on all the time . Trying to figure out what the ocean floor looked like and where subs can hide. World distribution of mid-oceanic ridges worlds longest mountain chain and didn"t see this until 1950s. Found that there was less sediment at the top of the ocean ridges. Look like mountains but have a hole down the middle. Very thin amount of sediment in deep ocean more sediment closer to land (continental margins) bc of costal systems. Deep trenches at continental margins not in all areas but some.
