CAS GE 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Venus Flytrap, Sulfur Dioxide, Phosphorus Cycle

43 views2 pages

Document Summary

Chapter 6: material cycles- the flow of matter in the environment. Venus flytrap- does not get energy from prey, it has chemicals to dissolve organisms. Venus flytraps live in the tropics that have nutrient poor soil, it dissolves the organism and gains trace nutrients that it needs. Matter- building blocks of life: organic matter- carbohydrates, fats and oils, proteins, inorganic matter- macro nutrients (nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, potassium) trace nutrients (calcium iron) Autotrophs- most get nutrients from environment in an inorganic form. The flow of matter- biogeochemical cycles- matter is used over and over again, Biogeochemical cycles- biological system, geological system, chemical system. Residence time (flow relative to size of storage) how long it stays in the organism. Various storage pools- atmosphere, water (ocean), soil earth ( soils, and deep crust) biota (soil both living and dead matter) Spontaneous flow- matter flows high to low concentrations, and no energy is required to drive these flows between storage pools (solution by dilution)
