CAS GE 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Aquifer, Hubbert Curve, Soil Horizon
Document Summary
Conventional fossil fuels are coal, oil, and natural gas which are least expensive to produce, so they supply nearly all of the energy provided by fossil fuels. Unconventional fossil fuels include oil shales and tar and are more expensive to produce; but they may replace conventional fuels b/c they are depleting. Crude oil is the most widely used fuel in the world followed by coal and natural gas. Renewable energy accounts for 17% of the world"s energy use in 2010: biomass makes up 50% of renewable energy. Biomass energy is fuelwood and charcoal, agricultural residues, and animal dung: 2. 5 billion people rely on biomass for cooking and heating. Modern renewable energy refers to solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydro power to produce biofuels and to produce heat with modern conversion devices (solar thermal) Renewable power generation is one of the fastest growing sources of energy.
