Document Summary

The beginning of the civil war ended the period of localism, agrarian, and slavery. The civil war became a portal into a new age of stronger central government, more complete racial equality, industrialization. When the party system collapsed in 1860, the inevitably of civil war became apparent to everyone. Jefferson davis led the south (president): the confederates. Supported the constitution because it supported slavery and it supported localism. Used it to legitimize the perpetual continuation of slavery. The confederates believed blacks to be inherently inferior. North and south government would fight over who would own the federal forts. During all this crisis over forts, president lincoln was docile and not active. In lincoln"s inaugural speech, he reiterated that he will not interfere with slavery where it existed, but was firm in refusing to allow slavery to expand. More states broke off and joined the south.
