CAS HI 214 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Pirate Code, Invisible Hand, Liberal Democracy
Document Summary
Pirates are entrepreneurs (maximize profit and discipline among the crew); pirates are capitalists, seeking above all: money; everything they participate in is toward goal of maximizing profit. Once out at sea, need each member to operate ship so less likely to physically harm/fire anyone thus discipline is less than expected. Pirate torture: used to generate fear (sadism), so that people who see the ships get scared, obey, and surrender due to reputation of brutality. Sweating: strip victim, surround with candles and poke them with swords/knives to have him run in a circle, continue to run until he dies from stab wounds or from the heat/exhaustion. Woolding: take rope, wrap around head or joint and insert piece of wood, twist like corkscrew until skull gets crushed, eyes pop out. Dif flags for each pirate ship; specific reputation to uphold. Reputation for violence but as little violence as possible (because contracts promise crew members extra money if limbs are lost)
