In the immediate aftermath of the civil war, there was a revolutionary shift in african-american america. This caused the strong reaction from the white south, the founding of the kkk, enforcer of the democratic party, policed election through fraud, violence and intimidation. Sharecropping and tenant farming develops that provide grossly unfavorable economic terms for blacks. Politically it becomes established that the democratic party is the dominant party and the party of white supremacy. Blacks will resist this establishment and one third of black workers will move in search of better conditions.
