Number of archipelagos and these islands are uninhabited and they were there until. 20 years ago but nobody cared about them. The chinese have the 9 points line where they claim these islands even though these islands are far. The countries that actually surround south china sea have also laid claims to these islands. These countries belong to asean vietnam has a claim, malaysia, brunei, and philippines has a claim based on the international convention unclos extending the line from the coast which are within their continental shelves. China claims that in the middle ages, chinese fishermen went there and therefore for historical reasons china has a claim and this claim supersedes every other claim. This wasn"t an issue until there was a closing of the frontier there might be gas, oil etc. This led to different countries seized different islands by turning these regions into sustainable human regions.
