John searle- most well-known in philosophy of language, philosophy f mind, and consciousness studies. Alan turing, the turing test (1950)- conversation between a person and a computer. If person can"t tell it"s a computer, computer passes test. Weak ai: a computer simulates or models the workings of a human mind. Strong ai: a computer really is a mind and has cognitive states like a human mind, searle argues against. The chinese room thought experiment: searle (knows no chinese) has a list of rules in. Chinese questions come in and searle uses rules to manipulate. Searle: i have only done symbol manipulation, with no understanding. Comparison to ai: running a computer program is: symbol manipulation like what searle did in room, not sufficient for understanding, so strong ai is false. Understanding can come in degreed, but some things are not able to understand. But we talk about cars and machines knowing" things.
