CAS PH 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: I Feel Free, Compatibilism, Fatalism
Document Summary
Sir alfred jules ayer (compatibilist): distinction between a cause and constraint. Free will and determinism: it is assumed men can act freely (morally responsible) and humans are governed by causal laws. Conflict between these 2 assumptions philosophical problem of will. Problem with this is we could be wrong; just because we feel free doesn"t mean we are. Just because you don"t know why you do something doesn"t mean they don"t exist (like blinking) The reason we couldn"t predict c or d isn"t a fault of science, it"s just that people are free, so you can"t get a causal story. Libertarians: the line of d will never move all the way to the right. Hard / soft d: the line is moving right and in theory it could get all the way to the right. If it"s pure chance, there"s no freedom and i can"t be morally responsible.
