CAS PH 251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Prima Facie, Harm Principle, List Of From Eroica With Love Characters
Document Summary
Rules: content specific, rules are made from principles; and from the rules we chose a particular action in a particular case. Principles: vague, the most general standards we can come up with, then rules are made from these principles. Principles rules action in particular cases: general principle, to content specific rule to case and take action. The georgetown mantra = four principles of bioethics (1) respect for autonomy (2) nonmaleficence (3) beneficence (4) justice. Not a unified theory of morality: principles conflict and must be balanced. Not all the principles coincide all the time. Prima facie: on it"s face, first and most obvious obligation you can have. All things considered: take everything into account, the moral obligation, like potential duty conflicts: save the child and miss your friends for coffee. Autonomy = capacity for self-governance, self-determination: undermining one"s autonomy (cid:402) lying to them, cheating them, manipulating them.
