CAS PH 251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Voluntary Euthanasia, Involuntary Euthanasia, Assisted Suicide
Document Summary
Modern medicine avails people to live longer and live an ever-greater fraction of their lives in debilitating, painful and less dignified state. This emphasizes the conversation of euthanasia for people who don"t want to live anymore, or those who help these people. Lots of policies, medication, assisted suicide etc comes to light. Euthanasia: taking steps to end a person"s life in order to relieve that person of permanent intolerable suffering, often from a debilitating, terminal disease, or to help ensure a dignified death. In lots of states, attempting suicide is not illegal since you don"t want to encourage people to succeed- if you go to jail for it, then you"ll be more encouraged to succeed in trying to kill yourself. Assisting suicide is different and illegal everywhere, e. g. facilitating others through that text messaging thing to succeed in suicide. Individual cases where these reasonings may sound right but policy wise there may be a lot of reasons to criminalize.
