There are two poles for mood disorders: happy and sad. Physical: prevalence extremely common, 10-15% will have it, common cold of mental disorders , gender 1 in 4 women will get it, 1 in 8 men will get it, course depression tends to be recurrent. Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia: you get better, but never quite fully recover. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder: some women may only have symptoms right before menstruation. Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder: trouble controlling mood. Important specifiers: seasonal pattern/seasonal affective disorder, peripartum onset. Bipolar i disorder: symptoms of mania. Behavioral takes a lot of risks, has poor judgement. Cognitive reaches mania over a period of time. Physical goes without sleep: prevalence over 90% tend to have more than one mania, course tends to be recurrent have a huge mania followed by depression. Bipolar ii disorder: major depressions and hypermanias, but not full on mania. Cyclothymic disorder: hypermania and dysthymia, never fully manic or depressed in the middle.
