Document Summary

Constructing a 3d word from a 2 dimensional picture on the retina: this is the problem we are going to talk about today. We have gone from 3d to 2d by taking a picture on our retina. However, going from 2d to 3d is much more complicated: we will face a lot of challenges. Think of building an ikea furniture: you have to go from 2d to 3d. There are rules to go from the diagram to the actual piece of furniture. However, our real world is not marked with rules and a digram. Any 2d image is compatible and consistent with an in nite number of views. A 2d projection is consistent with any number of potential viewpoints. We are going from a 2d picture with a number of in nite 3d sources to the correct 3d interpretation. Precise depth perception only happens with binocular cues, monocular cues only gives us an approximation: binocular disparity.
