CAS PS 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Somatosensory System, Mechanoreceptor, Nociception
Document Summary
There is a lot of mystery that is going on in the touch sense. Think about what is the physical stimulus, how do we channel it, how does the transduction happen, where does the signal go and how is it analyzed. These body senses consist of multiple sense categories. Tactile perception: information about things that we tough in the world. We gain info about things that we touch based on how our skin moves, how it transforms in response to the physical stimulus. Physical stimuli are things that we touch in the world. Movements of the body and skin give us information about the things that we are touching. Skin deformation changes shape in response to touch. Muscle strength/joint angle: how does your muscles stretch in response to what you are holding or touching. These two above give us information about an object"s texture and shape. Nociception: refers to our ability to sense physical damage to our body.
