While there may be strong experiential components, there are also strong biological and genetic underpinnings to many of these disorders. Anxiety disorders based on unrealistic and unfounded fear and anxiety. Panic disorder (pd): episodic attacks of acute anxiety and debilitating fear. Incidence is 3% of population, women 2x more likely than men. Shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, sweating etc. Other symptoms may include dizziness and fainting. Anticipatory anxiety (fear of attack, occurs between episodes) Attacks can be triggered by manipulations that activate the ans, such as an injection of lactic acid or caffeine, or breathing air with high co2 concentration. Phobic disorders: intense, irrational fear centered on a specific object, activity or situation. Most prevalent of all disorders: up to 10% or more experience. Onset around late childhood / early adolescence.
