Humans and great apes: born altricial, as opposed to precocial (ready to go, like precocious, need a caregiver to survive, but need different ways to keep carefiver around, for many mammals, babies bond with caregiver through attachment relationships. Infants actively seek attachment: clinging is more important for primates the babies have to grab on, human babies" touch also creates response in parents, mothers increased oxytocin during contact and in response to baby"s smile. Babies are also cute: large eyes, small chins and noses, large heads, attract adults, typical in many species, can create cuteness. Early dev"t of social bonds: 0-3 months o prefer to look at faces, recognize parents o not distressed when parent not present o expect contingent social interactions. By 2 months of age, infants get upset if caregiver stops interacting: 3-6 months o social smiling, not for specific people o social referencing.
