Common dimensions of temperament (common to most theories) Emotionality: ease and intensity of emotional arousal. Negative emotionality tendency to get upset and intensity. Fear, distress and other negative emotions cannot differentiate in upset infants at first. Sociability: tendency to seek and reward by interactions with others. Effortful control (self-regulation of attention, inhibitory control, emotional regulation) Dimension approach to temperament: everybody has the trait, may differ in amount or degree. Easy temperament: quick to establish routines, regular, cheerful, adapt well to new environments. Difficult temperament: irregular daily routines, slow to adapt, negative emotionality, withdraw from new experiences. Slow-to-warm-up: slow intensity, negative mood, adjust slowly to new experiences. Goodness-of-fit: the fit between child"s behavior style and environment. Poor fit between parent and child relationship. Poor fit between child temperament and physical environment.
