Anxiety is caused by the inability to get rid of pent up energy. Humans are motivated to achieve pleasure by discharging this energy. Censorship: when the mind excludes something from consciousness that displeases it. If you try to bring them into consciousness, this provokes resistance. Dreams: freud believed that this was the road to unconsciousness, because the ego s defenses are lowered when you sleep. This allows repressed material to come through awareness. Dreams serve an important functions for the unconscious mind and gives clues as to how it operates. Wish-fulfillment: a major function of dreams was the fulfillment of wishes. Dreamwork: where your underlying wish (latent) gets translated into manifest content. Transforms forbidden wish into non- threatening form, reducing anxiety and letting us to continue sleeping. Dream work involves the process of condensation (joining two or more ideas together), displacement, and secondary elaboration. No one outgrows id but adults and control it.
