CAS PS 354 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Palpitations, Brief Psychotic Disorder
Document Summary
This lecture is on dsm 4 because the dsm 5 is very controversial: overview, all diagnoses are supposed to be based on this. Allows for uniformity and system of billing codes: before people made diagnoses based on their own personal criteria and they wanted something more explicit. Dsm4 has 400 diagnoses: but even with the dsm4 there"s a lot of moving around, came up with the multiaxial system, or different categories, axis 1- clinical disorders- this is where most of us are. Normal but exaggerated clinical systems: axis 2- personality disorder and mental retardation. All of these things can contribute how you think and feel which can affect the diagnosis of your disorder: axis 5- global assessment and functioning not really assessed. Axis 1 disorders: anxiety disorders- panic disorder, phobia, ptsd, generalized anxiety, panic attack- nervous system arousal heart pounding palpitations etc. , ptsd- traumatic event is consistently reexperienced.
