1939 - invasion of poland until invasion of russia. Hitler turns his attention to the soviet union and does not honour the pact made w/ stalin. September 1941 - stalin finds himself at war. The german army was the biggest military of all; modern airforce. Hitler predicted that war was going to end by 1942 because he had really no opposition; he captured. 5 million prisoners of war and most of them died under german supervision (not fed properly, cold). North: baltic states (estonia, latvia and lithuania) german army goes north and conquers these three countries that had been occupied by the soviet union in 1939. Moscow: boundaries of moscow but moscow could not be conquered. Petersburg - only got to the boundary but the russian army made a stance. Tragic stories of survival and loss of life. Ukraine: traditionally, ukraine was a farm area (breadbasket of eastern europe). 1931 to 1935 - stalin crushed ukrainian nationalism and created famine.
