Legatus: men of senatorial rank in office of one of 4 legions. Should be 30 and be able to read. Must be a good fighter, size, strength, skill w/ sword. Wore phalerae (military medals: reforms of gaius marius. Creation of a standing army (construction and got poor out) After service, settled w/ land (romanization, spreads) Allies earn their citizenship after service (signed for 25 years) Each cohort had a standard (rod) and flag symbol. Spqr: senate and the roman people: weaponry. Shield: shield boss (metal circle in the center) Swords: carried 22 inch sword and a dagger. Romans knew how to make steel, but swords were made of iron (very heavy) Threw it at start of battle, then charged.
