Describes an emperor on his death bed who wants to send a note to someone who lives outside of town (you, the reader) Messenger has difficulty making it out of emperor"s bedroom with onlookers in crowds. Discusses how communication is difficult, there is so much in the way. A crystal clear message getting through to recipient is almost impossible. Dreaming is the way to get the message. We find out the message, rosebud, right at the end. There are many obstacles to communication, journalist does not figure it out. The camera is like the dream in kafka, that"s how we get the message. Hearst wanted the film buried because it was based off of him and rosebud was what he nicknamed his mistress"s private area. Hollywood made commercial films because they just wanted to make money. Other world markets (india, france, italy, japan) started competing and had darker films. Federico fellini, ingmar bergman, akira kurosawa, michelangelo antonioni.
