Used gum print, which made editing of photos easy. Signed work, trying to imitate fine art. Modernism composed of sharp edges, less soft and painterly. Wanted photography to claim it"s own place and find it"s own aesthetic. Portraits of georgia o" keeffe, considered photos as a composite. O"keeffe created a key set after stieglitz"s" death. Pictures of the sky, clouds, called them equivalent, possessed emotion. Collector - bought many photographs and collected other photographer"s works. Owned a gallery, promoting first pictorialism and modernism. Paul strand: announces modernism in camera work magazine. Emphasizes geometric shapes, abstract conglomeration of shapes. Documentation of the world, but still making art out of it. Photographed machine inventions and their aesthetic appeal. Close up view enhancing the basic shapes and geometry.
