For a long time, boston was dependent on sea commerce and agriculture. But in the 1830s, there was growth of manufacturing sites, cotton textiles, Boston gained more land through the annexation of roxbury and the filling in of the back bay. Peoples: the new face (and faces) of boston. Peak migration from late 19th century to early 20th century. Heavy irish migration to boston, especially in the 1840s and 1850s.
