From power to authority: the rise of the renaissance signoria. Signoria/ signory: transition from republics to signorys, hard to make decisions w/ councils in times of war/ internal struggles. Italy in the 15th c: expansion and aggression. Florence & pisa; venice & padua/verona; milan & parma/padua imperialism within. Rome: northern creep of the papal territories. Venice and milan: at war over terraferma. Florence: shifting alliances and the balance of power. The growth of dynastic small states: urbino, ferrara, modena. A model life: gian galeazzo visconti (d. 1402) Signore of pavia, seized milan from his uncle in 1385. Seized verona, vicenza, padua, piacenza; purchased title of (cid:862)duke of mila(cid:374)(cid:863) i(cid:374) (cid:1005)(cid:1007)9(cid:1009) Public works, administration, religious patronage markers of his rule. 1402: died during attempted conquest of bologna and florence. Succeeded by his sons: gian maria (d. 1412) and filippo maria (d. 1447) Dynasty ended with death of filippo and creation of ambrosian republic in 1447.
