Berbers: indigenous people conquered and islamized by arabs coming from arabian peninsula. Berbers believe in being able to adapt to other cultures, arabs not really. Turkish presence everywhere but keep low profile so berbers can handle themselves; each local cities given essential autonomy, each city governed by a bey (governor) People along african coast either lived by trade or piracy. Berbers similar to ancient greeks, didn"t produce anything; middle-men like greeks (distributive economy) Barbary pirates do not follow the consulate of the sea; pirates can do pretty much whatever they want. How bey is selected; people selects bey, bey writes to sultan in istanbul, sultan gives blessing; Berbers pretty much govern themselves and ottomans don"t really have control over that area. Lots of inlets and lagoons, perfect for pirates. 1492: spanish king expelled the moor and the jews, complete their reconquest of spain extreme influx of exiled muslims on barbary coast, most ethnically berber.
