A signi cant problem that emerged from the growth and changes in health care during the 20th century was in ation. One of the factors contributing to health care in ation has been the reimbursement system of the us health care industry this was a tremendous contributor to in ation. Services are paid for in units of payment: fee for service, episode of illness, capitated rate. Understanding them is essential to understand who takes the risk. If you have the risk: you can lose money, you can spend more time without getting reimbursed, you can get paid less money. When you go to work you should not be in risk of losing money. Key to understanding reimbursement is understanding risk (physician/provider, insurer, patient).
