Epictetus: self- restraint, discipline, and the pursuit of the good life. Socratic critical thinking method/approach: belief that happiness stems from pursuit of virtue, reason/knowledge essential in men"s soul. Hedonism pursuit of pleasure for pleasures sake (vain desires: both pushing against that too easy/subjective. Epicureanism adds notion of prudence b/c ensuring protection from any pain: ensures happiness/self-gratification, free from anxiety, restlessness, comfort b/c have choices, men immortal and blessed if making choices not attached to subjective fears. Everybody warning against passions and encouraging reason. Epictetus must bring pleasure to rule otherwise not using reason.
