SMG IS 223 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Extranet, Intranet, Computer Network
Extranet and Intranet
• Intranet: password protected web site designed for sharing within the company
• Extranet: password protected web site designed for sharing with select partners
(between companies) secured connection
• Data and communication are protected by firewalls and vpns
Net Neutrality
• Is a principle that internet service providers and governments regulating the internet
should treat all data on the internet the same, not discimianting or charging differentially
by user, content, website platoform etc.
• Expect to be connected, expect that your cable provider/ phone company is not messing
with the data and is connecting you to all websites
• Same for everyone!
Technology Drivers of instratcutre evolution
• Moore's law and microprocessing power
o Computing power doubles every 18 months
o nanotechnology : may shrink size of transistors to width of several atoms
o Contrary factors: heat dissi[ation needs, power consumption concerns
• Law of Mass Digital Storage
o The amount of data being stored each year doubles
• Metcalfe's law and network economics
o Value or power of a network grows exponentially as a function of the number of
networks members
o As network members increase, more people want to use it (demand for network
access increases)
o Social media
• Declining communication costs and the Internet
o An estimated 3 billion people worldwide have internet
Virtualization- act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including virtual
computer hardware platforms, storage devices, and computer network resources
