Chp 10: understanding mass media and the importance of media literacy. Convergence- content that has traditionally been confined to one medium appears on multiple media channels. Audience fragmentation- as people watched new channels, there were fewer people using any one of them. Therefore, the audience mass media is aimed to target decreases in size as more forms of communication develop. Mass production process- organizations that working together in industries to produce and circulate a wide range of content. Industrial nature- the various companies that work together within industries that makes mass communication different from other forms of communication. Communication- people interacting in ways that at least one of the parties involved understands as messages. Messages- collections of symbols that appear purposefully organized to those sending or receiving them. Interpersonal communication- involves two or three individuals signaling to each other using their voices, facial and hand gestures, and other signs (even clothes) that they use to convey meaning.
