Young people frustrated at turn of century had misfortune of living in dying world: bored, wanted action workers became conformists, blamed bourgeois and materialism as source of problem, for spiritual regeneration, flocked to cults, wandervogel. Cult for youth; wanted to escape atmosphere of urban life and retreat to countryside. Went to nature and became one with nature, helped farmers, etc. Developed sense of community/meaning greater than self b. Artistic movement made up of young, energetic, patriotic italian writers and painters. Wanted to energize system: nietzsche ubermensche and the will to power . Reacted against bourgeois culture; was prime critic of it.
