Phonotactics: language-speci c knowledge about what sounds typically go together in a word. Distributional regularities: words occur over and over again. Transitional probabilities (tp): the probability with which a particular element occurs, given a preceding element. Three scientists invented arti cial language that only has 4 words, with different syllables but common sounds that kids can produce. They had infants listen to these words in continuous speech for 3 minutes.
