Document Summary
Social strati cation: when individuals or groups occupy unequal positions in society based on socioeconomic factors. Three types of equality: equality of opportunity, equality of condition, equality of outcome. Durable inequalities are transferred from generation to generation. Social institution: a set of patterned and relatively enduring strategies for dealing with one or more important social needs like family, state, education, etc. Institutions have patterned social positions (statuses), roles and norms that operate to some degree independently of the individuals lling those positions. The bathroom is a gendered social institution. Equality of opportunity > inequality of outcome. Institution inequality: uneven access by group membership to resources, status and power that stems from facially neutral policies and practices of organizations and institutions. Women and men are provided with equal bathroom space equality . However, it fails to recognize differences between men as a group and women as a group.
