Document Summary
Amphipathic - has a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic component. Phospholipids are amphipathic and make up cell membranes. Cell theory - all organisms are made of one or more cells. Cells are the building blocks of life. Phospholipid bilayer, proteins, cholesterol, extracellular matrix, cytoskeleton, glycoproteins. The membrane can now form a barrier. Allows for control to transfer things in and out of the cell. Membranes do not break but remain continuous. Phospholipids keep in association due to van der waals forces, but this allows fluidity. Unsaturated creates a more fluid membrane than a saturated chain. Cholesterol makes the bilayer more (low temp) and less (high temp) fluid. Can be used to maintain the amount of fluidity. Peripheral membrane protein on the surface of either side. Only certain things can go through - selective permeability. Prokaryotes always contain a cell wall, only plants are eukaryotes that do.
