FA 164a Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Magnifying Glass, Alison Knowles, Fluxus
Document Summary
Painting to let the evening light go through 1961-66. Fluxus impulses to take in the real world. Shows how much they were thinking about painting. Asked to think about the role of the painting. Impulse to think about the sensation of light passing through a window. Asked to think about our role as the viewer. For these works to work, they need us more than a painting needs us. Magnifying glass attached to the ceiling panel and one tiny little word. A substitution from cultural programming to the outside. Technology used to break through the architecture of the building and still see outside. Follow the lines despite roads and buildings. She sits on the stage a man using large fabric shares. The awkwardness, the implied violence v. actual v. is felt. Some people are really nervous, and some people are excited to cut the fabric. The audience feels compelled to participate but each one does it in a different way.
